The compositional legacy of Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897) is in more than a few respects similar to that of Dvořák. Therefore, it is no mere coincidence that we should be releasing almost simultaneously, in Supraphon's ARCHIVE series, complete sets of the two composers' piano trios. Like Dvořák, Brahms too wrote four important piano trios, and similarly as Dvořák in his last trio defied traditional norms by the formal novelty of his Dumka, Brahms made his own step out of the conventional line by supplanting the cello in one of his trios with French horn. Those who relish the wonderful blend of manliness and quiet reserve in Brahms' lyrical output will find the chamber combination including piano to be an ideal vehicle leading to an auditive delight of the highest order. The comparison of the two masters is rendered all the more interesting here by the fact that the interpreters here are the same as in the Dvořák title: the Suk Trio, whose cellist is replaced in one of the trios by Zdeněk Tylšar on Frenchhorn.
